Wanless Park Community Tennis Club Teams' Policy
The very nature of a competitive team means that players compete for their positions on the team. This Teams' Policy will enable Team Captains to host tryouts for the team that are seen as fair and equitable for all players. It also establishes operating policies for each Wanless Team. The Wanless Park Community Tennis Club supports its current teams and any other team approved by the Executive.
-
Participation open to all
Participation on any team is open to all current Wanless Park Community Tennis Club members. The selection process and subsequent appeal/challenge process have the objective of fielding the strongest and most competitive team representatives at each level/league. -
Team Captains
Each Wanless Team is required to have a Team Captain and a Co-Captain/Alternate Contact who have the support of the Team players to act as conduits to the Club and to the League. The Team Captains are also accountable to the Club and to the League. -
Number of players
Ideally, each Adult Team has 12 core members and some spares to ensure a full complement of players each week in case a player cannot play. Each Junior Doubles Team has 10 core members. -
Selection process transparent and well-publicized
Team Captains will need to develop their selection process. It shall be transparent and well-publicized to all players who would like to tryout at the beginning of the season. The Wanless Teams Manager in conjunction with the Team Captains pre-select the tryout dates/times before the season begins. The Team Captains submit an e-mail to the Teams Manager for distribution to all Club members notifying them of the tryout dates/times and the selection process. The Wanless Teams Manager posts the details on the website. -
Formal selection process
The selection process is open to all current Wanless Park Community Tennis Club members. It shall provide each player with an equal opportunity to demonstrate his or her ability to contribute to the overall team goals. -
Subsequent appeal/challenge process in place
The Team Captain ensures that a process exists and is known to all players to appeal/challenge throughout the competitive season. -
Supply of tennis balls
The Wanless Park Community Tennis Club supplies tennis balls for home matches only. -
Commitment to the team
If a player cannot commit to playing for the team once in a 3-week period at the beginning of the competitive season (generally in early May to the end of June/middle of July), then that player shall be placed on the spare list. -
Code of conduct
Wanless Teams represent the Wanless Park Community Tennis Club as a whole and any activity or actions of a player(s) that would shed a negative light on the Club will adversely affect the Club's support of that player or their team in its entirety. Further details on the League policies for the Inter-Club teams are available on the respective League websites, see item 12 below. -
Court usage
Regardless of the current advance booking policy, all Wanless Teams have priority booking of courts for their home matches, which include rescheduling of rainout matches (4 courts) and a 2-hour practice once per week in off-peak hours (up to 2 courts) during the competitive season. -
Reimbursement for food
For each Adult Team home match, Wanless will cover the cost of food and non-alcoholic refreshments for up to $160 receipted/week. For each Junior Doubles home match, Wanless will cover the cost of pizza and refreshments. The Wanless Treasurer will accept receipts accompanied by an expense form for reimbursement on a timely basis. You can download the Reimbursement form here. -
Adherence to League rules
Each League has rules for all teams. Every team member, including spares must adhere to these rules. See the Toronto Ladies Tennis League rules, the Toronto Men's Tennis League rules, and visit the Toronto Junior Doubles League rules for details.
Appendix -- One example of a fair and equitable team selection process
Appeals/challenges to the initial tryout shall be scheduled at the convenience of challenge participants prior to the next regular team practice.
- Begin with a 10-15 minute warm-up
- Place all players onto the available courts, with highest ranking players (from prior year's results or first tryout) on Court 1 and down the line to fill the available courts
- Play for 20 minutes
- Keep score by accumulating full games with normal deuces
- Winners on the highest court (e.g. court 1) stay and switch sides
- Losers on the lowest court stay (e.g. court 2) stay and switch sides
- Winners on the other courts move up a court and switch sides
- Losers on the other courts move down a court and switch sides
- Continue to play for 6 sessions
- At the end of the 6 sessions, the captain will record the rankings of the players as follows:
- The winning players on court 1 will have a number 1 ranking, the losing players on court 1 will have a number 2 ranking;
- The winning players on court 2 will have a number 3 ranking, the losing players on court 2 will have a number 4 ranking, etc.
- The team captain will advise all players of the ranking of players, including the spare list. When rankings change as a result of an appeal/challenge, the Team Captain will advise Team members of the new rankings.
