Welcome to the 2022 Season

With the warm weather that we’ve had this week, all of us are starting to think about outdoor tennis and the launch of the 2022 season at Wanless.

Good news! We’ve been busy at work through the off season and are planning to open on Friday, April 1 at 7 AM.

We would like to extend a hearty welcome back to all returning members and welcome to new members to their first season at Wanless.

Wanless Tennis will continue to offer a host of activities for its members in 2022 including house league, adult, junior and mixed doubles ladders, a club tournament, adult and junior lesson programs, junior summer camps, and many other events. Some highlights for the 2022 season include:

• A new adult daytime drop-in on Thursday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM starting in early May. No registration will be required, just drop by and a volunteer will match you up with similar level players. Pairings will be shuffled on the half hour to accommodate additional players whenever they arrive.
• A new adult evening drop-in on Friday evenings to run alongside Live Ball. A form for weekly registration will be available starting in early April.
• Social events are back! Look for announcements throughout the season.
• We will continue to offer new members a free half hour assessment with our teaching staff. This free assessment allows new members to validate their self-rating so that they can be properly scheduled in house league, ladders, and other Wanless activities and also provides them with an opportunity to be introduced to Wanless’ instruction programs.
• Inter-club teams play for both adults and juniors is resuming this season (see below).
• We will continue to open at 7 AM for those who want to get an early morning match in. Note that the City has provided us the continued privilege of opening an hour earlier than normally allowed on the condition that none of our neighbors make any noise complaints.
• Our public hours will continue to be Saturdays and Sundays from 8 PM to 11 PM and from 9 PM to 11 PM on all statutory holidays.
• In order to hold our Adult Tournament Finals Day before the weather gets too chilly, we will start some of the tournament draws a little earlier this season (mid- to late August), and condense the schedule a little. This season, the tournament Finals Day will also include finals matches for the Junior Tournament.
• Junior Match Play on Saturday mornings was very well-received in 2021 and will return in 2022.
• The Wanless Cup was a tremendous success in 2021 and will also return this season. We expect the Wanless Cup to run after the inter-club teams season has ended and before the club tournaments begin.
• Guests and non-members are welcome to play at Wanless. More information on guest and non-member play is available here.

New Club Manager

We are pleased to announce that Richard Payne has joined the Wanless team as our Club Manager for the 2022 season. Richard has been a member of Wanless since 2001, so will be a familiar face to many of you. Richard will be responsible for the smooth running of the club and will be supervising all of our Member Service Representatives. Please join us in wishing Richard success in his new role. Wanless Tennis Instruction Programs

Arthur Wolf and his team have a full slate of group lessons available for all ages and abilities throughout the season. Many of these programs sell out, so don’t delay registering. Follow these links to learn more about the exciting programs available for adults and juniors:

Information on private and semi-private lessons is also available here. Note that availability for private and semi-private lessons is greatest during daytime through the week.

Inter-Club Teams

After a two year hiatus for competitive inter-club league play, all adult and junior inter-club competitive leagues will resume in the 2022 season. All leagues start in early May and finish in late June or early July. Detailed information will be sent out in the near future.

Volunteers Needed

As a community tennis club, Wanless is managed by volunteers. We always need help. In particular, we are looking for some volunteers to help out the New Member Welcome Committee by becoming “New Member Ambassadors” and making it easier for new members to be introduced to Wanless Tennis’ offerings. Please register your interest in helping Wanless be ever more successful.

COVID-19 Protocols

Wanless Tennis is required to follow the COVID-19 protocols outlined in Toronto Public Health COVID-19 Guidance for Outdoor Recreational Amenities. We will be opening the 2022 season with COVID protocols very similar to those in place in the Fall of 2021:

• All normal activities including singles and doubles play, house leagues, social events, junior and adult clinics, private and semi-private lessons, and ball machine rentals will be in full swing.
• A Member Service Representative will be on duty whenever courts are open in order to ensure accurate contact tracing. Everyone will be asked some simple pre-screening questions before entering the courts.
• Everyone should maintain physical distancing at all times.
• Everyone is strongly encouraged to use the provided hand sanitizer upon entering and leaving the courts.
• Arrive on time for your booking to enjoy a full hour of play.
• We will continue with staggered court times. Court bookings begin on the hour for Courts 1, 2, and 3, and on the half hour on Courts 4 and 5. For bookings on Courts 1, 2 and 3, go to the East gate. For bookings on Courts 4 and 5, go to the West gate.
• The Clubhouse is open to staff only.
• The City has not yet turned on the water for the clubhouse or the public washrooms. We will be renting a porta-potty for staff use until the water is turned on, but it will not be available to members or the public.

Booking Courts

As always, Wanless offers six (6) day advance court booking through our online booking software, GameTime. All members, even returning members, need to setup their GameTime profile to book courts. Your login and password from last year will not work. You can find detailed instructions here to setup your profile. Instructions on how to book courts is here. Please also take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the booking rules.

The Wanless Tennis website is there for you to get information on everything that the Club has to offer. Additionally, all members of the board are here to respond to your questions and concerns.
