Wanless Cup

Hello everyone,

The inter-club adult leagues in which Wanless typically participates have chosen not to proceed with the 2021 season.

In order to fill the gap left by the absence of adult teams, I’m pleased to share that we will hold the first ever Wanless Cup, an internal competitive league consisting solely of Wanless members.

The league will run for seven weeks starting July 5, with four weeks of round-robin play, a pause for two weeks for court resurfacing, two more weeks of round-robin play, and one week of finals, ending September 2.

We anticipate having two divisions, with one division competing on Monday evenings and the other on Thursday evenings. The time will either be 7-9 pm or 8-10 pm. For each division, we are aiming for four teams with two teams playing each week.

If numbers permit, each team will field lines of men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. There will be three to four lines each night. Each team will have a team captain whose role will be similar to the team captain of our competitive adult teams in terms of setting lines and ensuring there is equitable playing time. Every player will be required to play mixed doubles at least once.

All matches are best two out of three sets, with a super tiebreak in place of a full third set, limited by two hours. A tiebreaker will be played when the score reaches 5-5. Games are played with a three-point deuce. Each set won will count as one point.

Team finalists per division will be determined based on highest points. Ties will be broken based on total games won.

Registration is required. It is expected that if you sign up that you commit to playing all assigned matches. Playing level is 3.5+ and experience with competitive team play is ideal. You will be assigned to a division (and therefore a night) based on your relative playing level. Please indicate when you register if you are able to be a team captain. If you would only like to be a Spare please indicate that on the form. We will not be taking requests for teammates.

If interest exceeds the number of spots we can accommodate, we will employ a first-come-first-served approach of qualified players to form the teams. All other qualified registrants will be placed on a Spare list that all teams can draw on.

The deadline to register is Tuesday, June 29 at 11:59 PM.

Sincerely,
Kitty Chow
Teams Manager
